Sonia Gandhi born at Antonia Edvige Albina Maino on 9 December 1946 is an Indian politician President of the Indian Nation al Congress, Most important political party of India. She belongs to Nehru–Gandhi family. She finally joined politics in 1997; in 1998, was elected the leader of Congress.


She has been the President of the Indian National Congress Party since. Sonia Gandhi has served as the Chairperson of the ruling combination of UPA United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha since 2004. In September 2010, on being re-elected for the fourth time, she became the longest serving President in the 125-years history of the Congress party. Her foreign birth has been a subject of much debate and controversy. Sonia is the fifth foreign-born person to be the leader of the Congress Party, and the first since independence in 1947.


It was only Under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, India returned the Congress-led-UPA to a near majority in the 2009 National general elections with Dr Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister on his second term. Congress won 206 Lok Sabha seats most number since 1991.

Sonia Gandhi was named the 3rd most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine in the year 2004 and was ranked 6th in 2007. In 2010, Gandhi ranked as the 9th most powerful person on the planet by Forbes Magazine. She was also named among the Time 100 most influential people in the world for the years 2007 and 2008. The British magazine New Statesman listed Sonia Gandhi at number 29th in their annual survey of "The World's 50 Most Influential Figures" in the year 2010.
